2014 AFC West Preview

afcwest

In Peyton Manning’s second-year with the Denver Broncos, and 15th in the NFL, he set numerous passing record and led his team to a Super Bowl appearance. The Broncos did get dismantled in that Super Bowl game, leading to the question as to whether or not they will repeat as AFC West champions, or if it will be the always dangerous San Diego Chargers or Kansas City Chiefs.

1. Denver Broncos- The Broncos did a nice job keeping Manning’s weaponry up-to-date as they signed wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to replace Eric Decker, and brought in defensive end DeMarcus Ware to shore up the pass rush now that linebacker Wesley Woodyard is a member of the Tennessee Titans. The Broncos will remain contenders as long as Manning is under center, and with a stable of playmaking receivers at his disposal it’s not far-fetched to believe he’ll come close to his 2013 statistics while leading the Broncos to yet another playoff and potential Super Bowl appearance.

2. San Diego Chargers- Despite a lack of weapons around him, Philip Rivers had one of the best seasons of his 10-year NFL career by passing for nearly 4,500 yards and 32 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. However, now that Keenan Allen has proven his worth, and tight end Ladarius Green flashed his potential, the Chargers offense should be better than ever in 2014, which should allow them to pass up the Kansas City Chiefs for second-place in the AFC West. Question marks still remain on the defensive side of the ball, but rookie cornerback Jason Verrett is a defensive playmaker who could have a Tyrann Mathieu type effect for the Chargers this season.

3. Kansas City Chiefs- The Chiefs started out the 2013 season on a roll, but once their defense was exposed they fell apart and finished the season on a three-game losing skid. They still have veteran quarterback Alex Smith under center, and with Jamaal Charles taking the majority of hand-offs they have an offense that’s difficult, if not impossible to contain. Defense will be another issue, however, as they elected to part ways with star cornerback Brandon Flowers in-hopes that rookie third-round pick Phillip Gaines can have an immediate impact in the pass game.

4. Oakland Raiders- The Oakland Raiders had a successful off-season as they got the best linebacker prospect in the draft with Khalil Mack, and also drafted their quarterback of the future in Derek Carr. They went into the off-season with more money to spend than any other franchise and walked away with free agents Maurice Jones-Drew, James Jones, Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley, and Donald Penn among others. They tried building a team in one off-season but it won’t be enough to compete in 2014 which is the reason Carr will likely get snaps sooner rather than later, and the Raiders once again will finish last in the AFC West.

  • Steelers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. AFC North.
